Ask why your landing page isn't converting, and a conversion expert answers. Ask if you can afford your next hire, and finance runs the unit economics. This is Headcount, and Claude Code sets it up from one prompt.

What it is

Headcount is a set of Claude Code skills organized like a real company: 16 departments and 172 skills. Every department is its own plugin, so a project loads only what it needs.

The departments: Office of the CEO, Technology, IT Operations, Product, Marketing, Demand Generation, Revenue, Finance, Operations, Program Management, Customer Experience, Data and Analytics, Corporate Strategy and People (HR). Security and Legal and Risk sit apart: they review what the other departments commit to.

Skills load themselves when a question lands in their territory. Ask why a landing page isn't converting and the landing page conversion expert from Demand Generation answers; ask if you can afford a hire and Finance runs the unit economics.

The skills cite their sources: the project lists 184 standards, regulators and primary sources, and where an answer depends on a law or a standard, the skill names it.

All you need is Claude Code. Headcount needs no separate API keys or paid services: the skills are plain text instructions that run inside your Claude subscription.

Steps

  1. Step 1. Open Claude Code

Start Claude Code on your computer, in your project folder or wherever you usually work.

  2. Step 2. Paste the prompt

Claude asks what your business does, suggests departments for it and installs them only after your OK. Then it tells you when to restart Claude Code.

  3. Step 3. Ask a department

After the restart, just ask what's on your mind, for example why your landing page isn't converting. The right specialist steps in on its own.

Copy into Claude Code

Set up Headcount in my Claude Code: a set of skills organized like a company, github.com/cbrock84/headcount (MIT license). Install only from this repository; its plugin marketplace is called headcount. Work step by step:
1. Check that my Claude Code can install plugins. If the version is too old, tell me how to update and wait.
2. Add the plugin marketplace from github.com/cbrock84/headcount.
3. Ask me what my business does and which tasks I want to hand off. Based on my answer, suggest three to five of the sixteen departments, one line each on why. Install nothing until I say OK.
4. Install the departments I pick and check that they show up in Claude Code. Tell me when to restart Claude Code.
5. Explain in plain words how to use them: skills load on their own when a question lands in their territory, and I can call a specific specialist by name. Give me two example questions for each installed department.
If something fails to install, explain why and fix it. I'm not a developer: do everything you can do yourself.

Good to know

Where to start

The author recommends starting small: a smaller set of departments triggers more sharply than all sixteen at once. For a small business, Marketing, Demand Generation, Finance and Legal and Risk are a good first set; add the rest when you need them.

Call a specialist by name

When you want one specific lens, name the skill: for example, ask Finance to run the unit economics of a new service. The project's org chart lists every skill with search.

The reviewer departments

Security and Legal and Risk review what the other departments propose, and the department under review can't overrule their findings. Before a contract or a launch, ask them to go over the plan.

The honest read

  • The skills give expert advice; they don't replace the expert. Finance will build the model and show its assumptions, but check the numbers yourself, and for taxes, contracts and anything with a high cost of error, talk to a real professional.
  • The skills run inside your Claude Code subscription and use its limits like any other conversation. The more departments you install, the more descriptions Claude keeps in context, so install only what you need.
  • The project is young and moves fast: the repository description still has the old numbers (15+ departments, 125+ skills), while the README already says 16 and 172. If this guide and the README disagree, trust the README.
